Mulled wine is a traditional holiday tread in many Old World countries, especially around Christmas. It is served hot or warm and is usually made with cheap red wine along with various mulling spices and sometimes raisins.

There is no specific recipe for mulled wine and the spices involved in its recipe. It is commonly a combination of orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom and ginger, boiled in red wine with sugar, heated and served.

Fill your home with intoxicating aromas of mulled wine on cold weather. Make this easy aromatic mulled wine in the slow cooker.

  • 1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 squeezed orange or orange juice
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • optional garnishes: citrus slices, extra cinnamon sticks, extra star anise.

Combine all ingredients into pan and slowly bring to simmering point (not a boil) over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar or honey has dissolved. Simmer very gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Do not allow to boil. Stain and serve warm with your desired garnishes.

You can also place oranges, cloves, cinnamon and star anise in a cheesecloth if you don’t want them in your mug. Mulled wine can be made 2 hours ahead. Rewarm gently over medium-low heat before continuing.
