- 1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds
- 1 squeezed orange or orange juice
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
- 1/4 cup honey or sugar
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- optional garnishes: citrus slices, extra cinnamon sticks, extra star anise.
Combine all ingredients into pan and slowly bring to simmering point (not a boil) over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar or honey has dissolved. Simmer very gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Do not allow to boil. Stain and serve warm with your desired garnishes.
You can also place oranges, cloves, cinnamon and star anise in a cheesecloth if you don’t want them in your mug. Mulled wine can be made 2 hours ahead. Rewarm gently over medium-low heat before continuing.
